Mark Bowles: 99-month sentence for epileptic crisis of dying veteran

  • Diana Beth They keep beating him in the head. I'm filling criminal charges against them for both counts. My son is a vulnerable adult, Mary Neal with brain injuries and brain atrophy. They don't care.

  • Diana Beth I haven't spoken to my son, but the prison tells me that Stearns County sheriff's did this because my son wouldn't get on his knees. He has a titanium plate in his spine and a spacer where his L-1 Vertebra was shattered. He cannot get on his knees. He wouldn't be able to get up again. They took his cane away too.

  • Diana Beth Thank you Mary Neal for doing this for my son. He called for the first time tonight and said they had slammed his face into the cement when he refused to get on his knees and wasn't walking fast enough for them earlier with his shackles cutting into his ankles. He had been in that restraint chair all day with the shackles breaking through the skin because they were so tight. I hope everyone contacts Governor Mark Dayton about this.

It would be illegal to keep a dog in a tight space 23 hours a day and gas or Taser him for barking. It would be illegal to put a dog in deadly restraint for control. That happens to mentally ill people routinely in the nation's correctional facilities. What happened to Larry Neal? Why are we still asking that question after nearly 12 years? Cover-ups regarding the wrongful deaths of mentally challenged inmates and free people in the USA are common and vile.

Mentally Ill Americans Need Dog Justice. Treat mental illness medically, not legally. Support the H.R. 3717 "Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act." The U.S. congressional bill provides for crisis intervention team (CIT) training for police and corrections officers, assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) programs (subsistence assistance plus mandated treatment) to stop recidivism, resumption of Medicaid insurance for certain facilities, and other needed changes. Support "AIMI vs. USA" to compensate mentally ill people and their families for health discrimination.

Estate Planning for Mentally Ill or Developmentally Challenged Children

Assistance to the Incarcerated Mentally Ill (AIMI) seeks input from #lawyers who have advice for parents of children or adults with Autism, epilepsy, Downs syndrome, and mental illness. The time to establish trust funds and name reliable executors to their children's estates is now. AIMI does not want to write articles about these children being cruelly incarcerated for their mental illnesses and developmental disabilities weeks after their parents' demise if this could be avoided by proper planning.
If you have advice for middle class people who wish to prepare for their children with such disabilities and some with elderly parents experiencing old-age dementia, AIMI would appreciate your input. Please write or recommend articles about preparing for the continuing needs of mentally challenged relatives after one's demise. Most AIMI members are poor or middle class families, but there must be some arrangements that middle income people can make so that their mentally challenged loved ones will be less likely to experience homelessness, incarceration, or police violence after the main caretakers' deaths.
Many of the families with whom AIMI works are headed by people who are approaching middle age and worry how their grown children who have mental dysfunctions will manage after their own demise. Every day, young couples give birth to children who have Down syndrome or who develop Autism or some other impairment. Estate planning for these families is of the utmost importance. Do you have advice and provide services for them, lawyers?

Email the WSJ for Medicaid Resumption

Washington announced that public comments are being accepted until June 9, 2015, regarding the resumption of Medicaid for mental health treatment. Medicaid was withdrawn as insurance for psychiatric inpatients in the 1970's, which resulted in today's catastrophic rate of incarceration for people with mental illness. 

 Please send an email to Stephanie.Armour@wsj.com to say you want Medicaid resumed for psychiatric inpatients and outpatients in the USA.
