Online Wake for OKCPD Taser Victim, Darrell Gatewood

Darrell Gatewood was Tasered to death by Oklahoma City police officers on March 1, 2015, the same day that Los Angeles police officers shot Africa to death, an unarmed homeless man. Gatewood was handcuffed by police officers inside the residence, then dragged outside and deposited in a puddle of water where he was electrocuted by Taser. His death was apparently an execution without the benefit of judge or jury.

Gatewood self-medicated with drugs. Gatewood's family reports that he had bought and used synthetic marijuana shortly prior to his girlfriend called 911 last Sunday, without any expectation that the responders were significantly more stressed and unpredictable than Gatewood was. The unarmed man was killed, although he presented no immediate danger to police or anyone else. In fact, Gatewood had passed out on the floor before officers arrived according to eyewitnesses to his execution. 

Assistance to the Incarcerated Mentally Ill (AIMI) advocates against the homelessness, incarceration, prisoner torture, and wrongful deaths of people with drugs and alcohol dependencies just as we do regarding the neglect and abuse of persons with serious mental illnesses. We advocate for their civil and human rights and try to console families of such persons when deaths occur under the color of law. Some news reports said that Gatewood had mental health problems, but his family denies this. His family members who spoke with this writer said that Gatewood had no mental illness but did have a drug addiction.

An online wake for Gatewood was sponsored by National Network in Action (NNIA) channel on Blogtalkradio on Saturday, March 7, 2015. Members of Gatewood's family expressed the negative impact his death has on his family, especially Gatewood's children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gatewood was the family babysitter and the primary organizer of family dinners and get-togethers. He was an excellent cook and a man who stepped in as a mentor to the children, some of whom no longer have immediate access to their own father.

Oklahoma City is the Taser capital of America, with more Taser deaths than anywhere else in the nation, according to reports. Gatewood was the third member of his family to experience police brutality within the last few years. His cousin, Christopher Tucker, was stopped while driving and nearly Tasered to death a few years ago, and Tucker's son was also assaulted by police and arrested. It would be illegal to keep a dog in a tight space 23 hours a day and gas or Taser him for barking. It would be illegal to put a dog in deadly restraint for control. That happens to mentally ill people routinely in the nation's correctional facilities. What happened to Larry Neal? Why are we still asking that question after eleven years? Cover-ups regarding the wrongful deaths of mentally ill inmates are common and vile.

Mentally Ill Americans Need Dog Justice. Treat mental illness medically, not legally. Support the H.R. 3717 "Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act." The U.S. congressional bill by Rep. Tim Murphy provides for crisis intervention team (CIT) training for police and corrections officers, assisted outpatient treatment (AOT), and other needed changes.

Censorship, Isolation, Death

1.   People who censor AIMI's online advocacy for human rights believe that you do not care about brutality victims who are not Caucasians. Therefore, the censorship team removed certain photographs from this blog that depict whites killed by police during their psychotic episodes but left photos of the black and brown victims. A minus sign usually appears where photographs were stolen from Dog Justice blog.

2.   Nazis see all indigent and working class people as commodities whose worth is determined by their contribution to an efficient nation. They consider the elderly and handicapped to be "useless eaters" like Hitler did. In fact, Columbia, South Carolina recently announced plans to coral homeless people, among whom the mentally ill are overly represented, into a 240-bed concentration camp at the edge of town. That was also Nazi Germany's first step in its "Final Solution" - the isolation and massacre of its citizens who were mentally ill, physically handicapped, or elderly. Before exterminating millions of Jews and Africans, roughly 300,000 mentally challenged people of all races were eliminated. For Columbia to intern its most vulnerable citizens in a concentration camp sets a dangerous precedent that could spread throughout the nation. Please object.

3.   The censorship team also removed our Dog Justice, which is the shape of a dog formed by the lines in a person's fingerprint. With few exceptions, the drawing was positioned near the beginning or end of articles in "Dog Justice for Mentally Ill" blog. The picture of DogJustice is meant to convey the fact that dogs have a protected right to life in the United States that is ordinarily denied to people with mental illness and development disabilities.

4.   I wrote and spoke about the photo thefts in "Justice Gagged" blog and at our "Assistance to the Incarcerated Mentally Ill" Blogtalkradio show. The links to the article and the radio show are below. This article has three(3) photos, eight(8) urls, and nine(9) paragraphs.

5.   Some may reason that a concentration camp like Columbia erected would supply food during the winter and housing where the homeless can live in safety. But imprisonment is no guarantee of safety. The local and federal government colluded to cover up the secret arrest and murder of my mentally, physically disabled brother, Larry Neal, in 2003. The Justice Department was in direct overview of Memphis Shelby County Jail at the time, yet Larry's family is denied any accountability whatsoever for his kidnapping and murder, and we endure censorship and persecution for making inquiries and because we advocate for justice regarding other offenses against mentally challenged Americans.

6.   I have published thousands of articles and emails since Larry's death to warn Americans that if no accountability is demanded for mentally challenged people who are continually killed by police and those who suffer behind bars, the rights of life and liberty for all citizens are jeopardized. Nearly a decade ago, I realized that concentration camps and possibly genocide are planned for indigent and working class people of all races, beginning with those who Nazis perceive as being "useless eaters" - disabled people and the elderly. In January 2009, Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) introduced H.R.645, proposing six concentration camps in America. The bill died in committee. In 2011, Congress passed S.1867 with provisions for Americans' indefinite military detention without trials (introduced by Sen. Levin (D-MI). NDAA was signed into law by the president on New Year's Eve a couple of months later. Now Columbia, South Carolina plans to intern its homeless population in concentration camps in the absence of trials (introduced by Councilman Cameron Runyan, also a Democrat). It appears that the United States is returning to its roots as a penal colony and that mentally challenged people are first to go, as usual.

7.   "Dog Justice for the Mentally Ill" blog is not another appeal to officials to please be fair and humane to mentally challenged Americans. It is an appeal to the public to demand that everyone's human and civil rights are honored, including the mentally ill. Through select news stories, we prove that the mentally ill are marginalized people who suffer from systemic discrimination. They comprise over 50% of the police violence victims as well as over 50% of America's prisoners. AIMI demonstrates that they are reserved untreated to become prison commodities, although it is less expensive to treat people than to trap them in a revolving door to prisons and hospitals. AIMI offers alternatives to incarcerating and killing mentally challenged people: (a) build and re-open mental hospitals; (b) reinstate Medicaid or another insurance to cover overnight hospital stays for indigent people in psychiatric treatment facilities; (c) institute assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) programs; and (d) use specially trained police to conduct lunacy arrests.

8.   As you look through "Dog Justice for the Mentally Ill" blog, please notice the minus signs left when cyber stalkers removed pictures of murdered Caucasians and our graphic of DogJustice. Think about the combination of censorship, concentration camps, and mass murders targeting specific populations. Please don't be Nazi, America.

Unarmed Mariam Carey Killed by D.C. Police; Man Sets Himself on Fire on National Mall

Police pulled the child from the rented black sedan, then EXECUTED an unarmed woman on Capitol Hill. Another dead mental patient. How can we expect the rest of the nation's police officers to use restraint if it is not used in the nation's capital? Why was Mariam Carey killed rather than apprehended? Did she reach for a baby diaper?

ABC reports: Miriam Carey's family said she had been suffering from postpartum depression with psychosis.

Interviews with some of those who knew the Stamford resident suggested she was coming apart well before she loaded her 1-year-old daughter into the car for the 275-mile drive to Washington, D.C. Carey had suffered a head injury in a fall and had been fired as a dental hygienist, her former employer said.

“Deadly force was not necessary,” Mariam Carey's sister said. Valerie, who is also in law enforcement, says that police could have rammed her car or disabled it instead. They didn’t have to take her life in the process.

“There had to be something else they could have done,” said Amy Carey, another sister.

Many people are in crisis. A man set himself on fire on the National Mall in Washington on October 4. Thank goodness the police did not shoot him. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the hospital. Huffington Post reports: "Katy Scheflen said passing joggers took off their shirts in an effort to help douse the flames, and the man was clearly alive as the fire spread. A police department spokesman said he was conscious and breathing at the scene. MedStar Washington Hospital Center tweeted that the man was taken there and he was in critical condition." He later died.

Sprankle's tragedy proves that gun control is unlikely to protect Americans from avoidable mental health crises. Only removing barriers to timely psychiatric treatment, improving access to mental hospitals, and instituting assisted outpatient treatment (AOT) programs can address Americans' mental health needs and enhance community safety. Was shoot-to-kill an appropriate response by police? Would Sprankle have been temporarily disabled by Taser? Kenneth Sprankle was the fourth person shot to death by St. Pete PD this year, according to an ABC report.

"This will happen again and again and again until we find enough places where people can take their neighbors and relatives that may not need to be hospitalized," St. Pete City Councilman Karl Nurse said.

Councilman Nurse is not unlike police officers this writer polled, 100% of whom agreed that mentally ill people do not belong in prisons and jails.

Leroy Duffie

Leroy Duffie's Ordeal - Ridiculed, Beaten, Humiliated. Police forced Leroy Duffie, an innocent, double-leg amputee, to get out of his car at gunpoint, with hands up, then beat and ridiculed him as "a cripple crawling around," the African-American minister claims in court.

Leroy Duffie claims Lincoln city police handcuffed and beat him and left him lying on the street for half an hour before they finally "removed the handcuffs and allowed the plaintiff to crawl under the van to retrieve his prosthetic legs." Duffie sued the City of Lincoln in Lancaster County Court.

Duffie describes himself in the lawsuit as "an African American ... with a diagnosis of depression and post traumatic stress disorder and ... a double amputee with prosthetics." FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Gregory Williams is a double amputee in a wheelchair. He filed a civil lawsuit against a Merced police officer who tased him during a confrontation in September of 2009. Police were called to Williams' home during a domestic dispute.

A video obtained by the Merced Sun-Star shows Williams in handcuffs on the ground during the arrest. His attorneys said Officer John Pinnegar used a 50,000 volt Taser on Williams before humiliating him by leaving him outside with his pants falling down and his genitals exposed.

A civil trial at the Federal courthouse in downtown Fresno ended in a hung jury: four to four.

UPDATE (June 13, 2013) A grand jury declined to bring criminal charges against a Houston police officer who fatally shot a double amputee in a wheelchair last fall, a shooting that spawned nationwide criticism and renewed calls locally for more accountability of law enforcement. HPD officer Matthew Marin shot and killed Brian Claunch on Sept. 22, 2012, after the mentally ill man threatened his partner with a ball point pen, police have said. Claunch suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and lived in a care home for the mentally ill. Marin also killed another citizen in 2009.

Fighting Hostility Against Handicapped People

Condolences to family and friends of Brian Claunch, and best wishes for successful justice quests of Leroy Duffie and Gregory Williams. Although this writer did not read that Mr. Williams has mental illness like Claunch and Duffie, bouts of depression are common for double amputees. People with mental and physical handicaps, and even the elderly, are often victimized by police officers in the United States. Hitler called people with such conditions "useless eaters." They were rounded up, interned in camps, and killed in Nazi Germany before minorities were slaughtered in the quest to build a "perfect race." Please don't be Nazi, America.

My brother, Larry Neal, was a lifelong schizophrenic heart patient who was killed after 18 days of secret arrest in Memphis Shelby County Jail in 2003. While he was incarcerated, police lied to his family and social worker and denied having him in custody although he had suffered numerous arrests in that "correctional" facility because of his mental dysfunction. His missing person report, fingerprints, and contact information for his family and social worker were on file. My family is denied any explanation, records or investigation to determine how police killed Larry. Citizens with mental and physical dysfunctions are often treated like "useless eaters" in America, too.

The fact that the public needs to be better educated regarding police terrorism, brutality, and murders of our physically and mentally disabled relatives and neighbors is clear when one considers that Williams' jury was unable to reach a consensus and the grand jury did not indict Officer Marin for Claunch's death. Hundreds of thousands of people withstood foul weather to protest animal abuse and signed petitions for justice for Michael Vick's dogs who were brutalized and killed, but they have less sympathy for disabled people who are similarly victimized. 

Only through education will the public come to understand that some police officers have a propensity to ignore the human and civil rights of handicapped people, and their administrators help them escape accountability in order to avoid negative publicity and save money on wrongful death and police brutality civil actions. Many people tend to look at each case of abuse as an isolated incident rather than recognizing the abuses and murders of mentally and physically disabled people as being systemic discrimination and hate crimes that cruelly deprive citizens of their right to life and liberty based on their health status.

Hate crime is a category used to describe bias-motivated violence: "assault, injury, and murder on the basis of certain personal characteristics: different appearance, different color, different nationality, different language, different religion."

Age-Onset Dementia: Monroe Isadore, 107, Killed by SWAT

Americans who have elderly relatives with age-onset dementia should remove their car keys and guns, especially people of color. The world's oldest police victim died yesterday in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, killed by a SWAT team because he had a gun. Monroe Isadore was 107 years of age. His roommate reported that Isadore was belligerent and uncooperative with police who answered her emergency 9-1-1 call, which she made after Isadore reportedly brandished a handgun and threatened her and his daughter. Isadore, who apparently suffered from age-onset dementia and was reportedly deaf and legally blind, became agitated when told that he would need to move to an apartment. Probably because Isadore was a black man and this happened on the NFL kickoff weekend, police dealt with the crisis swiftly, and Isadore was killed in a hail of at least 30 bullets. PINE BLUFF, AR (Sunday, September 8, 2013)—Isadore was pronounced dead just before 7:30 p.m. — about three hours after the incident began, according to the The Pine Bluff Commercial newspaper. No police officers were injured. Police say their investigation is continuing.

Another standoff happened in Texas two days later. It lasted nine hours. The perpetrator (whose name was withheld, probably because he is a Caucasian) was arrested, unlike Isadore, who died in a hail of 30 or more bullets. The Texan had actually shot a policeman in his head, whereas Isadore had hurt no one, had no hostages, and nobody was in immediate danger. If Isadore had been given nine hours, he would undoubtedly have fallen asleep or died of old age. See the excerpt from KWTX.com below:

SAN ANTONIO (September 9, 2013)—A standoff that started Monday morning at a motel in downtown San Antonio after a police officer was shot while responding to a family disturbance dragged on for nine hours before it ended late Monday afternoon. The man suspected of shooting the officer was barricaded in a first-floor room of the two-story motel, but was taken into custody at around 5 p.m. Monday.

A third police standoff is currently underway in Madison, Wisconsin, which has lasted for nearly three hours so far. If the perpetrator is a black man, his time should be up soon. An excerpt from NBC15.com is below:

Monday, September 9, 2013 --- 6:43 p.m. Madison Police are in the 400 block of Berwyn Drive trying to take a subject into custody. Parts of the area are blocked off. NBC15's Phil Levin is at the scene of this police standoff and police tell him they took a family member out of the home about around 4:00 p.m. Police say man in 50's is suspected to be alone inside still. The incident started around 2:30 p.m. when a 9-1-1 call came in from the man's concerned family.

Some standoffs with police officers have lasted for days in the United States, but the incident involving Monroe Isadore, an elderly black man suffering from dementia, ended in under three hours with the centenarian's body riddled with police bullets. This, too, is racism.

America has approximately 50,000 centenarians, and only 8% of them are over age 104. We believe Monroe Isadore should be resting safely in a care home tonight. Instead, his body is in the morgue. Advocate for specially trained officers in every metropolitan area to handle lunacy arrests, please. The world's oldest police victim died yesterday in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, killed by a SWAT team because he had a gun. Monroe Isadore was 107 years of age. His roommate reported that Isadore was belligerent and uncooperative with police who answered her emergency 9-1-1 call, which she made after Isadore reportedly brandished a handgun and threatened her and his daughter. Isadore, who apparently suffered from age-onset dementia and was reportedly deaf and legally blind, became agitated when told that he would need to move to an apartment. Probably because Isadore was a black man and this happened on the NFL kickoff weekend, police dealt with the crisis swiftly, and Isadore was killed in a hail of at least 30 bullets. Police Murder Ethan Saylor, Down Syndrome Victim

FREDERICK, MD — New details have emerged of the death of Ethan Saylor, a mentally handicapped man killed inside a movie theater in January while wearing police handcuffs. The official cause of death was asphyxiation, and an autopsy has revealed that the man suffered a peculiar injury — fractured throat cartilage — which one expert says could only have been caused by force of some kind. Force, which could have included a direct blow or manual strangulation.

Ethan loved the movie and clapped at its end. He wanted to see it again and refused to leave. Police were called. Ethan's caretaker explained that they lacked the money to purchase more tickets and asked police to please wait it out. Touching Ethan would make him "freak out."

“Next thing I know, there are I think three or four cops holding Ethan, trying to put him in handcuffs,” the aide told authorities, according to Sheriff’s Department documents. “I heard Ethan screaming, saying ‘ouch,’ ‘don’t touch me,’ ‘get off’ and crying. Next thing I hear is nothing.”

“Mommy! It hurt!” were Ethan Saylor's last words.

The police officers who killed him are still on the job. 

Ethan Saylor, who police murdered over a movie ticket, Kelly Thomas, who police murdered for vagrancy, and Tim Sauders, who jailers murdered on a restraint table where he was abandoned for four days, were all Caucasians. They and other Caucasians were killed like black people with brain dysfunctions are, but their families' treatment after the murders significantly differs from the experience of some black survivors. The media reported the circumstances of these men's wrongful deaths, and accountability was demanded. Ethan's death is being examined by the U.S. Justice Department. 

All the families were or will be awarded damages for the police murders. None of the families were censored, gangstalked, and financially persecuted for communicating about the deaths of their disabled relatives. No police went to the homes of Ethan, Kelly, and Tim and warned their families not to report crimes done to silence them. Survivors were not threatened by police with Tasering and arrests for complaining about the murders. Their homes were not burglarized to remove evidence related to the murders and denial of due process of law. None of these men's elderly relatives were sexually assaulted on their hospital beds as punishment for seeking justice in court. Nobody sprayed a chemtrail "x" over their rooftops. No one outlined their yards in paint and ordered helicopters to stand still over their rooftops for 30 minutes as harassment. They are not victimized by malicious prosecution. These families' phone calls and Internet usage are not blocked to prevent the world from knowing about their suppression - because they are Caucasians.

Caucasian families' cries for justice when police kill their disabled relatives are not ignored by every human and civil rights organization or suppressed by the media and law enforcement agencies, because the murders are not covered-up by the U.S. Justice Department. White survivors do not endure harsh tactics to elicit their silence. They are not faced with the possibility of having to take the murders and their own victimization before the United Nations as a last resort in the search for justice. All of these circumstances befell Larry Neal's family, because we are black.

Ethan Saylor, Kelly Thomas, and Tim Souders were Caucasians. They were murdered like Larry Neal was under the color of law. Larry was secretly arrested and held 18 days without his heart and psychiatric medications until he was murdered by that deprivation or by Taser or by restraint device or by brutality, but he was black. In America, that makes all the difference in how police murders are handled, even with blacks in positions of government responsibility. That is because most Negroes in decision making positions work for white supremacist globalists who consider it ridiculous to answer for any black person's wrongful death, particularly one who is mentally disabled. They have no respect whatsoever for anyone's humanity, but with blacks, they are not afraid to show it.

Families of mentally challenged people of every race and everyone who cares about their human rights must band together. Survivors of white police violence victims are treated better than survivors of black victims, but at the end of the day, they all have dead love ones. Families with members who suffer from schizophrenia, Downs syndrome, dementia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, Autism, and other brain issues must realize that whether black, white or other, their loved ones are at greater risk for incarceration, brutality, and police murder. None of our mentally challenged relatives and neighbors are safe as long as news about their deaths is stifled and police officers and jail guards are protected after wrongful deaths. It is time for everyone to unite and give Assistance to the Incarcerated Mentally Ill.

In the United States of America, a country that reportedly goes to war for the sake of "human rights," there is a blaring need to give at least DOG JUSTICE to the mentally ill. Read more in the seven(7) links below:

HOW are jails and prisons kept full? Crime is actually down. Christian Science Monitor reports: "Recessions can be the perfect storm for crime. Yet preliminary crime figures from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 2009 show that the crime rate is falling across America, across all categories. Violent crime was down 5.5 percent and property crime down 4.9 percent between 2008 and 2009, according to FBI statistics . . . Crime in every category decreased, says FBI spokesman Bill Carter. Murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault all declined in 2009, he said. Robbery – which tends to boom in bust times – dropped 8.1 percent."

Freefall into Madness: The Fresno County Jail’s Barbaric Treatment of the Mentally Ill

For the past six years, in an effort to cut costs, the Fresno County Jail has repeatedly denied mentally ill defendants the anti-psychotic medications prescribed to them by their outside doctors—medications needed to keep them sane.

As a result, according to Fresno County judges, former nurses, correctional officers, doctors, lawyers and the families of the defendants, the jail medical staff is triggering psychotic breakdowns in people suffering from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

The prolonged mental breakdowns are causing some defendants to languish in isolated confinement for years at a time, they say, creating a system of mental torture at the county jail. Denied their usual medications, defendants suffer paranoid delusions and mania so debilitating that some have tried to commit suicide multiple times in jail, slashing their throats or wrists with county-issued razors.

According to DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. gun-related homicides dropped 39 percent over the course of 18 years, from 18,253 during 1993, to 11,101 in 2011. During the same period, non-fatal firearm crimes decreased even more, a whopping 69 percent . . . Pew researchers observed that the huge amount of attention devoted to gun violence incidents in the media has caused most Americans to be unaware that gun crime is “strikingly down” from 20 years ago. In fact, gun-related homicides in the late 2000s were “equal to those not seen since the early 1960s.”

Americans are continually plummeted with violent scenes on the evening news, but little to nothing is reported about the nation's falling crime rate. Whereas the reduction in crime is good news for the average citizen, it is not good news for prison investors or for municipalities that signed contracts with private prison companies, guaranteeing them a certain occupancy rate. Therefore, I repeat the question in paragraph 1:

~ The members and friends of Assistance to the Incarcerated Mentally Ill strongly object to withholding psychiatric drugs to induce lunacy in order to lengthen sentences of wrongly imprisoned mental patients, who should be either in mental hospitals or community care programs. 

~ We object to crime and punishment becoming an business enterprise that reduces people to commodities that are bought and sold on Wall Street. 

~ We object to privatized correctional institutions and feel the quest for success of such facilities led to mass incarceration for Americans, regardless of their innocence or mental illness. 

~ We submit to you that the War on Drugs is actually a war on middle-class and indigent Americans who are either recreational drug users or addicted to hard drugs. 

We urge everyone who is committed to prison reform to recognize this: There were no overcrowded prisons and jails and therefore no need for private correctional facilities until the mentally ill were "de-institutionalized" and evicted from mental hospitals and community psychiatric services suffered budget cuts. Mentally ill people in America are the backbone of the private prison industry, which grosses billions per year. Crime is declining, including violent crime, which generates the longest prison sentences. With the loss of "business," the mentally ill are at greater risk than ever of suffering long prison sentences to satisfy the greed of prison investors, who include judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, and lawmakers.

America's reduction in violent crime has not generated the cheers one would expect, because it could mean less money for prison owners and investors. This places targeted populations (minorities, the mentally ill, and whites who lack wealth) at greater risk for excessive sentencing and wrongful convictions. Three examples happened recently in Florida and Louisiana: 

~Marissa Alexander is a Florida woman who had just given birth and feared serious injuries from being beaten by her ex-husband, who caused her to be hospitalized from a previous beating. As he cornered and threatened her, Alexander fired a warning shot. She was wrongly sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for firing one shot into the ceiling. ~Sharmeka Moffitt, a woman in Louisiana, allegedly set fire to herself, causing third degree burns, and falsely claimed she was set afire by a white supremacist group. Obviously, if Moffitt did this, one should question her mental state. Instead, she faces "terrorism" charges and could be imprisoned for decades for hurting herself. ~Kiera Wilmot, a teenage Florida girl, was expelled and faced felony charges for her science experiment when her mixture of common household products caused the top to pop off a water bottle. Nobody was hurt. Due to an outcry by people nationwide and a successful Change.org petition that gathered nearly 200,000 signatures, the charges were dropped. Both women and the teen are black females, which matters more than it should in this land of "liberty and justice for all."

How far will prison owners and investors go with their "quest to arrest"? For the first time in centuries, debtors prisons are making a comeback. For the first time in America, the White House has the option under NDAA to point out any person or group of people and demand their arrest in military concentration camps without naming any crime or allowing trials. The love of money led to slavery in the 1600s, an institution that has made a comeback in America. This is particularly hard on those who through poverty or mental illness are our most vulnerable citizens.

“This county [Fresno] doesn’t care about its treatment of mentally ill behind bars or otherwise,” said Susan Anderson, the recently retired supervisor who watched her colleagues on the board implement cut after cut to the county’s mental health budget until, she said, there was nothing left but skin and bones.

“If the Board of Supervisors wanted mentally ill defendants to get their anti-psychotic medications in jail, all they would need to do is direct the sheriff, the health officer and the jail doctor to do it,” Anderson said. “But the thinking of the board, the sheriff’s [office] and the rest of the criminal justice system here is not about prevention or humanity. It’s all about punishment.”
